The Jubilee Singers were first organized in 1871 to raise funds for Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. The University had been founded after the American Civil War to educate young African Americans, many of whom were ex-slaves.   The Jubilee Singers introduced slave songs, known as ‘Spirituals’, to the world and were instrumental in preserving this unique musical tradition. They broke racial barriers in the US and abroad in the late 19th century. The Story of the Jubilee Singers tells the stories of some of the early members of the singing group as well as providing a history of Fisk University. It also contains the words and music to 127 of their deeply moving songs, including ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot’, ‘Go Down, Moses’, ‘Many Thousand Gone’ (‘No More Auction Block’) and ‘Steal Away’. Published by Hodder & Stoughton in 1885. Photographic frontispiece of the Jubilee Singers. Good condition. Binding intact.
