Gage Old Green Gage Greengages have been grown in France since the Middle Ages, and are known there as ‘Reines Claudes’. Prunus domestica Old Green Gage has probably the best flavour of any plum. The fruits are small, round, and a rather dull green, sometimes yellowish when ripe, but the greenish-yellow flesh is melting, very juicy, with a rich, sweet, delectable flavour. Not a heavy cropper, and with rather poor disease-resistance, it needs very warm, sheltered conditions to thrive, and may do best fan-trained against a warm wall. As plums have a short flowering season, choose another group 3 plum to pollinate its lovely white blossom. Prune if necessary (plums tolerate a quite crowded crown) but only in summer.
