The Adventures of Harry Richmond, by George Meredith

Quay Books
The Adventures of Harry Richmond is the work of Victorian poet and novelist George Meredith (1828 – 1909). Serialised in the Cornhill Magazine between September 1870 and November 1871, some aspects of the story are believed to be strongly autobiographical.
The novel follows the progress of young Harry Richmond as he is torn between his steady, sensible grandfather and his irresponsible father, Roy Richmond. After abandoning Harry and his mother, Roy flits in and out of Harry’s life, until finally he draws his son into a hare-brained scheme to marry Harry off to a German Princess.
While some reviewers considered the plot a bit far-fetched, poet Arthur Symons found it "rousing, enthralling, exciting, full of poetry, and a serious and masterly study in character.”
Published by Constable & Co in 1911.
