New Tales of Horror is an anthology of horror stories, published in 1934 by Terence Armstrong, better known by the pseudonym John Gawsworth. Between the wars Gawsworth edited a number of anthologies, championing the cause of many writers and persuading them to dust off their pens and create new work. One of those writers included in this collection was the ‘eccentric and often maddening genius’ Hugh MacDiarmid. At the time this anthology was published, Gawsworth was also providing the Scottish writer with a roof over his head in London. Another writer featured in this collection is the Welsh horror writer Arthur Machen. He had once been a huge success; in fact Stephen King has described his novella The Great God Pan as ‘maybe the best [horror story] in the English language.’ However, interest in Machen’s work had waned and from the late 1920’s he faced financial hardship.
