Portuguese custard tarts or Pasteis de Nata have in recent years taken the world by storm. From their humble beginnings in the Lisbon suburb of Belém, they spread to London, Paris and New York and have in recent years arrived in Dublin. Their popularity comes down to their simplicity. It is all about the delicate flakiness of the pastry and the sweet light texture of the custard filling, slightly browned on top. They are original, traditional and classic and in this class you will learn how to make them for yourself. They are a wonderful mid morning or mid afternoon pastry. A great gift to bring to someone's home and loved by all generations. Your host Blanca, has in recent years mastered and refined her recipe. Price includes tea/coffees on arrival and a few other sweet treats that Blanca will show you how to make. About your host Blanca Valencia is originally from Bilbao in Northern Spain and trained at the Cordon Bleu in London with a Diploma in Pastry and Cooking. She has worked at cook schools in Madrid, Chicago and London and has lived and worked across Latin America, China and Europe, exploring their cuisines and food cultures in depth. She has also worked with leading food producers and has written about food for magazines and periodicals on both sides of the Atlantic. Her speciality and real love is reserved for Spanish and Latin American cooking (think Mexican, Peruvian and Argentinian). She also loves Chinese teas and tea culture. She regularly hosts workshops at the Cervantes Institute. She now lives in Dublin with her husband and two girls.
