Chinese Swamp Cypress
Not to be confused with the American Swamp Cypress (Taxodium). Quite rare in cultivation, Glyptostrobus pensilis is a medium to tall growing conifer. The feathery foliage is deciduous which is very unusual in conifers. Soft green foliage turning to rich brown-red in autumn prior to falling. As its name suggests, it is an ideal conifer for growing in damp conditions. Eventually this tree will develop unusual aerial roots from the lower stem which will add an extra level of interest. Chinese Swamp Cypress needs some protection in cold exposed sites but has grown well without protection in the UK and Ireland. It will make an interesting addition to a wet woodland garden or near a water garden.
