Douglas fir A good looking tree mainly for planting in a medium to larger garden. Despite its common name, it is not a true Fir tree, hence the word Pseudo in its name. The cones and maturing seeds have been said to resemble the back legs and tail of mice who were said to hide in the cones during forest fires. A particular 150 year old specimen located in Co. Wicklow holds the title of Irelands tallest tree, measuring at over 200ft in 2009. Crushing a few leaves in your hands will release a beautiful citrus smell. Another tree that can be used as a timber crop. There is a lot of Douglas fir used in the construction of our building. Growing as a Christmas tree: Not a well used variety in Europe but very popular in the US since the 1920s, the Douglas fir has soft, dark green or blue green needles. The tree is popular for its good needle retention and a lovely citrus fragrance.
