Algerian Ivy Gloire de Marengo From North Africa and the Canary Islands, Hedera canariensis var. algeriensis Gloire de Marengo took its name from Napoleon’s 1800 victory over Austria. It is a handsome, very vigorous, evergreen, self-clinging climber with large, glossy, variegated leaves of deep green and grey-green bordered with creamy-white. Insignificant flowers in autumn are followed by black berries, a useful source of winter food for birds. Algerian Ivy Gloire de Marengo is very good for giving interest and light to a shady area, for climbing into a tree or for covering an ugly structure. Not for the coldest areas, and can be damaged by cold winds. Harmful if eaten. Holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
