Crataegus succulenta Jubilee
Bred in the Netherlands from a north American species closely related to the common whitethorn, Crataegus succulenta Jubilee is a medium-sized, fast-growing, thorny deciduous tree with a strong trunk and branches and a very dense, full crown. The mid-green leaves are ovoid with a toothed edge. In late spring and early summer the tree bears plentiful white blossom, followed in autumn by masses of round red berries or haws, large by whitethorn standards. Round-fruited cockspur Jubilee makes a good specimen or avenue tree, and is tolerant of urban pollution. Protect the bark of young trees from rabbits. Unlike most whitethorns, it is fireblight-resistant.
