Flowering Currant A medium-sized deciduous shrub, Ribes sanguineum has toothed, maple-shaped leaves. From late February until April, the stunningly scented, somewhat pendulous pink-red flowers are a good early food source for bees. Small black berries appear in Autumn. Flowering currant is ideal in mixed shrub beds; also very common in mixed informal hedges.
