Hydrangea Red Baron A compact mophead or hortensia hydrangea with a strong crimson colour, Hydrangea macrophylla Red Baron is a sturdy, small to medium-sized, deciduous shrub with a rounded upright habit. The leaves are dark green, flushed with purple. From July to September, the mophead flowers emerge rose-pink with a greenish-cream eye and gradually turn a deep crimson, then purple. Leave the attractive seed-heads on the bush over winter to prevent frost damage, cutting back to two healthy buds when spring comes. More correctly known as Hydrangea Schöne Bautznerin, Hydrangea Red Baron is well suited to container growing.
