Skimmia japonica Rubinetta - male
A really easy, reliable shrub for winter colour in a shady spot on slightly acid soil, Skimmia japonica Rubinetta is a small, slow-growing, evergreen shrub with a dense, mounded habit. The foliage is deep green and leathery, making the plant drought-resistant once established. All through winter, the bush carries red buds, which open in spring to heads of scented, white flowers, tinged pink; these light up the shade and are highly attractive to pollinators. Despite the rather feminine name, Japanese skimmia Rubinetta is a male form, and will not bear berries.
