Clematis montana Grandiflora A beautiful variant of the mountain or anemone clematis, Clematis montana var. Grandiflora is a large, very vigorous, deciduous climber, ideal for covering an ugly (but substantial) wall or building, or climbing through a large, strong tree. The mid-green leaves are in three parts (trifoliate), as is typical of clematis. From late spring to early summer the plant is covered with pure white, scented, four-sepalled flowers with golden centres, larger than those of the species at almost 3” (7cm) across; sporadic flowering continues through the summer. Substantial support is necessary. No regular pruning is required, but if the plant eventually gets out of hand, prune back to pairs of healthy buds immediately after flowering. Keep the roots shaded. The white anemone clematis holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
