Magnolia Yellow Bird Bred at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, hybrid Magnolia brooklynensis Yellow Bird is one of the best yellow magnolias. A medium-sized, deciduous tree or large shrub with an upright, conical habit, its large, leathery, dark-green leaves turn a rich yellowish-brown before leaf-fall in autumn. Gorgeous goblet-shaped flowers, a soft, creamy lemon-yellow with a greenish tinge, appear in April and May, lovely against the emerging green leaves. Because the blooms appear late for a magnolia, there is less risk of frost damage to the flowers, so magnolia Yellow Bird is a good choice for colder areas. Do not the let the roots dry out in summer.
