Japanese Silver Grass Ferner Osten A really good cultivar of Japanese silver grass or eulalia grass, Miscanthus sinensis Ferner Osten (Far East) is a fairly compact, deciduous, perennial, warm-season grass with a graceful, fountain-like, clump-forming habit. The slender, arching leaves are green with a narrow vertical white stripe, giving a light, mobile effect; these turn copper in autumn and persist through winter. Beautiful, feathery, deep red plumes rise above the foliage in August eventually turning pink, then silver. Cut back hard in early spring to allow the new foliage through. Japanese silver grass Ferner Osten holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
