Nuttall’s Oak
An American oak of the red oak family, Quercus nuttallii is a vigorous, deciduous tree with a pyramidal habit when young, later developing a rounded, more open crown. The bark is grey, and the lower branches grow straight out, while the upper branches grow slightly upwards. The lobed leaves are smaller than those of most red oaks, emerging maroon, then turning deep green, before becoming brilliant red in autumn. Insignificant, golden- yellow flowers are borne in May, followed by 1”/2.5cm acorns, as broad as they’re long, in deep cups. Tolerant of urban pollution, Nuttall’s oak makes a good specimen or lawn tree.
