Apple Herefordshire Redstreak
An ancient – and famous – cider apple, Apple Herefordshire Redstreak was raised on Lord Scudamore’s Herefordshire estate in the early 17th century from a pip he brought back from France. The fruits are medium-sized and green, characteristically streaked with red, producing a reddish, bitter-sharp juice, high in tannin and acid. It makes a red-tinted cider with high specific gravity and alcohol content, and is used for single vintage ciders as well as for blending. The tree is moderately vigorous, spur-bearing, and a good cropper, but with a tendency to biennial bearing, so it’s important to thin the apples. Fruit is rather thin-skinned. Some susceptibility to canker.
