A4 prints of collage & acrylic by Lindsay Merlihan.
The Shapeshifter transforms or tricks. This image is steeped in symbolism, interweaving the story and traditions of many cultures to convey the vibrant yet illusive persona of the trickster. In the Argentinian celebration of Diablos Carnavaleros, devil costumes are worn with mirrors and masks for 9 days to celebrate Mother Earth - during which time the identity of the wearers are not to be revealed. The Aztec god Tezcatlipoca, whose name means "Smoking Mirror" - strongly associated with the night sky, black obsidian and the jaguar - was a shapeshifting deity who often used his powers in the name of kingship, war, protection and sacrifice. We know the term "smoke and mirrors" in regards to illusion or misleading information. In the Druidic story of Taliesin, Gwion takes on many transformations through animal and object to come to his enlightenment, renamed as Taliesin - the most influential Bard and Druid of all time. Water plays an important role.As Shapeshifters navigate through different levels of consciousness, we can too. If you are walking with the Shapeshifter you may feel empowered with charm, adaptablity and vibrance. But a strong practice of integrity is essential and a commitment to service and protection are paramount.
