Hawthorn - ‘Sceach gheal’ Our most common hedgerow species. Hawthorn, Whitethorn, or ‘Sceach gheal’ in Irish, it goes under many names and is one of our most important native hedgerow species. It makes a fantastic neat deciduous hedge as it clips well but can also be left to grow. Crataegus monogyna is easily recognisable in the month of May when its thorny branches are smothered in white flowers; the Autumn brings an abundance of its famous red haws which can be used to make jam or delicious Hawthorn jelly. A very important species that supports lots of wildlife. Hawthorn can often be found near holy wells and it is famous in Irish lore as the Fairy Tree - it is considered unlucky to cut an old one down. It will grow in most soils and will take wind and coastal exposure.
