Country: Spain  Region: Castilla-La Mancha  Vintage: 2015 Category: Red Wine  Color: Red  Varietal: Red regional (non-Italian) Producer: Montañar "Montañar means 'mountainous', and the winery takes its name from the Serrania de Cuenca mountain range in Castilla-La Mancha. The wines come from the family run winery established by the three Parra brothers (Francisco, Javier and Luis) in 1993. The brothers had the foresight to move to organic and then biodynamic viticulture early. All of the grapes are grown both organically and biodynamically – the vineyards have been certified organic since 1997 and biodynamic since 2012 because the brothers feel they get the best fruit this way. The dry and windy climate of La Mancha makes it easier to practice organic and biodynamic viticulture because fungal diseases are unable to thrive in in these conditions. We are excited to have added the Graciano to this list, made from a grape variety that thrives in the dry and windy climate of La Mancha. This wine is proof that this tricky variety can deliver colour-rich, intensely perfumed red wines when cultivated in the right conditions. Despite the hot and dry climate, these wines have a freshness derived from the cool nights. The wines are fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel vats and are bottled without any additional ageing. The Verdejo verges on tropical fruit on the nose but retains a citrus zest on the palate. The Merlot is brimming with dark plums and berry fruit with silky tannins and the Graciano offers bright, aromatic black fruit and round tannins. These wines are dangerously easy to drink." It is notoriously low-yielding and a difficult variety to grow as it is very susceptible to mildew. Fortunately, the dry and windy climate of La Mancha means that fungal diseases are unable to thrive in these conditions. Montañar's organic and biodynamic Graciano grapes are sourced from a small parcel of vines grown on clay soils around the city of Cuenca in La Mancha. This wine is proof that this tricky variety can deliver colour-rich, intensely perfumed red wines when cultivated in a dry environment. Vinification: Fruit went into a pneumatic press before being fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, and was bottled without any additional ageing. The wine is unoaked and meant for drinking while it is young and fresh. Tasting Notes: A deep red colour with violet hues. It offers bright, aromatic black fruits of plum and black cherry on the nose with refreshing acidity and round tannins. Closure: Stelvin  ABV:14%  Acidity [g/l]: 4.8
