French poet, philosopher, and journalist Péguy grew up poor in Orléans, France, (1873 - 1914). He wrote until the outbreak of World War I, when he was one of the first soldiers to be sent into battle. He died at Marne in 1914 He combined fervent Catholicism with socialist politics to create a body of work unlike any other. Péguy was profoundly influenced by the world in which he lived; materially he was completely disinterested, but from a spiritual and intellectual point of view, never was man less detached: deeply troubled and disgusted by what he saw, he never ceased to voice his dismay at the dishonesty, the cowardice and the selfishness of his times. Péguy's convictions were too sincere, his belief in the need for action too acute to permit his indulging in mere academic theorizing. This book was published by Cork University Press in 1953.
