Constance Markievicz, born over a hundred years ago in Sligo, was a freedom fighter, suffragette and the first woman elected to the House of Commons. A fascinating and inspirational character, she was a prominent figure in the 1916 Rising and was sentenced to death afterwards. The sentence was commuted as the British Government wouldn’t execute a woman.
