Constance Markievicz, born over a hundred years ago in Sligo, was a freedom fighter, suffragette and the first woman elected to the House of Commons. A fascinating and inspirational character, she was a prominent figure in the 1916 Rising and was sentenced to death afterwards. The sentence was commuted as the British Government wouldn’t execute a woman. She sought freedom for Ireland and equality for all and very much lived her principles, as is wonderfully explained in this book by Fatti Burke and her dad John - a History and Geography teacher - the third in their little Library series. Constance Markievicz is an inspiring story about the rebel countess that will inspire kids to become whatever they dream of.
The Little Library series also includes Brian Boru: The Warrior King, Tom Crean: The Brave Explorer, Mary Robinson: A Voice of Fairness and Granuaile: The Pirate Queen. For more kids books, check the rest of the collection.
