Country: Spain Region: Rioja La Rioja Alta  Varietal: Garnacha  Vintage: 2020 Colour: Red Style: Dry Producer: Miguel Merino  Description: “La Ínsula” is a very small vineyard planted with Garnacha before the attack of the Phylloxera at the end of the 19th century that we started working very recently. Here we find ungrafted vines on a sandbank at the edge of the Ebro, covering just over 1 square meters. This sandy soil prevented the vines from being affected by Phylloxera. The Garnacha grape adapts to most climates and soils and produces very different wines. In many places it has been planted for its resistance to heather and drafts, while in other areas it is cultivated for its resistance to pests like powdery mildew. Garnacha behaves very differently depending on the soil on which it is located and depending on the yield. The grapes from the La Ínsula vineyard are incredibly fine thanks to its sandy soil. The harvest was done by hand in small boxes to reach a total of 700 kgs. Fermentation took place in a small stainless steel tank. After fermentation, the wine was racked into a 500-liter oak barrel, where malolactic fermentation developed spontaneously. In total, the wine remained in the oak for 14 months. We have bottled 630 bottles of our first vintage 2019 of La Ínsula.
