About the Piece These came out of further studies in the AI Tree area, combined with dot screens. One of the directions evolved into a grid of lozenge shapes, imperfect and textural. These lost any tree associations, but had a sequenced, analogue quality, which seemed to have a resonance with music, and particularly the misapplication of the Roland 303 bass emulator to Acid House, and subsequent related musical genres. The 303 was a pretty insipid bass substitute (although it didn’t hurt the groove of ‘Rip it Up’ by Orange Juice), but when pushed to extreme settings it created a new analogue squelchy sound that became the backbone of Acid. This is a kind of visual equivalent – the forms are sequenced, but distorted and ragged. The use of fluo orange is also an intentional call back to the visual language of Acid House. Print size is 50 x 50cm, but the printed area is circa 29 x 29cm. These will be the only versions of this print produced.
About the Artist
Alastair is a graphic design graduate of NCAD and the Royal College of Art. He’s worked as a designer, and design educator, for far too long to dwell on. Interested in process and materiality in printmaking, he’s previously worked in letterpress, but returned to screen printing in 2017.
Often found devising an image-making technique, and then discovering ways to undermine, abuse, and subvert it. Loves a happy accident. Disinterested in rigorous adherence to consistency in a world of perfect reproduction. Which is convenient.
