Gaffs: Why No One Can Buy a House

Our homes have been the frontline of defence during the COVID19 pandemic - as all over the world we were told to 'stay home' to help stop the spread. Yet since 2014, over 38,000 people were made homeless in Ireland. This precedented housing and homelessness crisis - one that is having a profound impact on whole generations of renters and their children, and is causing increased inequality and in turn threatening the economy. COVID-19, Hearne says, has shown the failings of the neolibral policy to treat housing as an investment.
Hearne contextualises the Irish housing crisis within the broader global housing situation. He looks to countries that have gotten it right and then back at Ireland, examining the origins of this crisis. He clearly states this clearly down to government policy and brings to the fore the perspectives of those affected, new housing activists and protesters, showing that a reshaping of policy towards a rights and sustainable approach is something that we can and need to do.
