This is such a cute idea for a Christmas gift. I throw these pieces on the potter's wheel and then add the star on the top through a technique of hand-building. The pierced holes let the light come through the piece and give the impression that the Christmas tree is lit up. The pieces are finished in a glossy transparent, which brings out the white of the clay.
