Chew Caramels coated in Dark Chocolate. "Urney Chocolates grew out of a jam pot" was how Harry Gallagher described the ascent of his chocolate factory from its humble beginnings in the parish or Urney in Co. Tyrone. Beginning with jam, Harry's wife Eileen soon branched into sweet making in order to secure an increased sugar allowance and in 1919 began making batches of raspberry fudge. In 1924 the family and many of the workers moved to Tallaght and established their new chocolate factory on the site of a former RAF airfield and so began the business of Urney Chocolates. The business grew to become one of Europe's largest chocolate factories and in the 1960's was employing more than 1,000 people, at which stage the family sold it to W.R. Grace who then sold it to Unilever. Today we are reviving the Urney brand by going back to its artisan origins and focusing on the batch production of premium chocolate products using the finest ingredients just as Eileen Gallagher did some 100 years ago.
