Astrantia Superstar Also known as Astrantia White Giant, Astrantia Superstar certainly lives up to its name – it’s tall, with really big flowers. It’s a clump-forming herbaceous perennial with palmate (like a hand) deeply lobed, deep green, basal leaves, a wonderful foil for the flowers. From June to September, branched, green stems rise above the basal clump bearing large, starry, pincushion-like pure white flowers tipped with green, and touches of crimson in the ‘pincushion’. It is not unlike that excellent old cultivar, Astrantia Shaggy. Deadhead to keep the flowers coming; cut back in late autumn, and mulch in early spring to conserve moisture. Site: Tolerates exposureSoil: Any moist, fertile but well drained soilPosition: Best in partial shade; tolerates full sun in reliably moist soilSeason of interest: Flowers June to SeptemberHardiness: Very hardyHeight: 2’5” (75cm) Spread: 1’7” (50cm) in 2-5 years
