Country: France Region: Bordeaux (St. Emilion) Varietal: Merlot, Cabernet Franc Vintage: 2011 Colour: Red Style: Dry Producer: Chateau Vieux Mazerat Drink: 2021-2031 Description: "A new acquisition by proprietor Jonathan Maltus, who sold Grand Destieu in order to upgrade to this terroir, this 10-acre vineyard is planted with 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc. It is situated near several of the premier grand cru classes of St.-Emilion, including both Beausejours and Angelus." Robert M. Parker, Jr. A blend of Merlot (80%) and Cabernet Franc (20%), the 2011 is sourced from 60-year-old vines and is limited production with vinification being reactive. The resulting wine is powerful, complex and persistent. "This powerful wine comes from a superbly sited vineyard in the heart of Saint-Emilion. It is concentrated with huge tannins laced with black plum juice, dark berries and a dense, brooding character. A powerhouse of both fruit and tannin, it needs to age." 95 points, Wine Enthusiast "A spectacular effort from Jonathan Maltus, this inky/purple-coloured, complex 2011 (made from 60-year-old vines and a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc) offers up notes of graphite, sweet blackberry and cassis, and hints of earth, espresso, spice and chocolate. Already drinking well, this rich, layered, full-bodied St.-Emilion was cropped at a low 30 hectolitres per hectare. It can be enjoyed now and over the next decade."93 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
