Clay Half-Day Workshop About the Workshop Coil, slab, pinch, build and sculpt – there is so much you can do with clay! This workshop is a great introduction to working with clay using handbuilding techniques, and you will be amazed at what you can make during this half-day class. Before ceramicists invented the wheel, handbuilding was the only way they could create functional and artistic ceramic forms. The oldest known ceramic artifact was handbuilt and is dated as early as 28,000 BC.  Handbuilding is a pottery technique that allows you to create forms with clay, without using a throwing wheel. All you need to get started is clay, tools, your hands and enthusiasm.  We’ll supply the clay and tools – you bring your hands and enthusiasm!  During the class you will learn how to make pottery pieces at your workstation, through coiling, slabbing, pinching, building, or sculpting methods. One of our experienced teachers will guide you through the process, sharing some basic skills with you. You may take as many of your pots home with you as you like (please note the pots will airdry over a few days and may then be used for display - they will not be glazed or watertight). Eircode: D07 K744 google map. FAQs When will my pot be ready for the Glazing Workshop?  You can decide on the day if you want to keep one of your pots for the Glazing Workshop. Please make sure you speak to your teacher about it and follow his or hers instructions on how to mark your pots.  Please allow at least 4 weeks between your Throwdown Workshop and booking the Glazing Workshop as we will need to bisque-fire your pot for you prior to it being glazed. Please sign your pot as instructed by the teacher. Please note - sometimes, not often, pieces don’t survive firing in the kiln and they get damaged - this is beyond any potter’s control. Should this happen to your pot we will supply you with a blank pot which you may glaze at the workshop. What should I wear/bring?  Your clothes and shoes might get wet and dirty from clay splashes so please wear comfortable clothes that you do not mind getting messy. Please bring your own apron and a hand towel if you wish.  You may take as many of your pots home with you as you like so please bring small boxes (like Tupperware or cardboard) to bring your creations home with you.  Who is this course for? This pottery workshop will suit beginners looking for an introduction to working with clay, or those who have worked with clay before and would like a simple refresher or time on the wheel. Is there an age limit for the Workshop? This course is generally for people aged 18 and above. A teenager over 15 may attend if they are accompanied by an adult. Please let us know in advance.  What's the day like? You will be welcomed by your teacher and brought to an upstairs light-filled classroom (no lifts available). Each participant will have access to their own pottery wheel/workstation and tools for the duration of the workshop. We supply all the materials you need. The workshop ends with a class and equipment tidy up - another important part of the potter's training!  What are my transport/parking options getting to the workshop? The nearest Luas Red Line stop is 'Four Courts', (a five minute walk away) and many bus routes service Stop 1479 on Ormond Quay, at the junction with Capel Street. You'll also find a Dublin Bikes stand at each of these locations. Due to our City Centre location, on-street parking immediately outside the building is limited, but there is pay and display in the general area, and there are large car parks nearby at Jervis Shopping Centre and beside the Fruit and Vegetable Markets. Is my booking transferrable and what is the cancellation policy? You may transfer your booking into someone else's name - please just let us know before they attend. Should I wear a mask?  As per the government's regulations masks are not mandatory during the workshop.  Are there any Health and Safety issues? To reach the classroom you will have to use stairs and there is no lift in the building.  Please keep your hair tied up and your nails short.  Where can I contact you with any questions? You can email us at [email protected].
