The History of Saint Edward the King (Estoire de seint Aedward le rei) by Matthew Paris (1200-59) departed from previous accounts of Edward the Confessor (1003-66) by being modeled on secular history rather than hagiography.
Thelma S. Fenster and Jocylyn Wogan-Browne present a new translation into English as the first volume in a sub-series devoted to works written in what is traditionally called Anglo-Norman but is here called French of England to emphasize that the melange was not quite either French or English.
