Its origins date back to1952 when Fernando Nicolau de Almeida produced the first evervintage of Barca-Velha and kickstarted the quality revolution inDouro table wines. Named after the legendary Dona AntóniaFerreira, one of the formidable widows of the world of wine, CasaFerreirinha pays homage to the memory of this visionary woman.Today, the winemaking team is headed up by Luís Sottomayor, who restrains the Douro’s natural exuberance to produce winesthat have a vibrant freshness allied to a lovely texture and depth.VINEYARDSThe grapes for Papa Figos Branco are picked from carefullyselected sites in the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior at around600 metres above sea level. The mountainous vineyards haveschist soils with vines planted either in "vinha ao alto" vertical rowsor on "patamares" terraces. Grapes grown at this altitude benefitfrom a wide diurnal temperature range, with hot dayscounteracted by cool nights, and the grapes undergo an idealslow ripening process, accumulating great flavour intensity whilstretaining acidity.VINIFICATIONAfter gentle crushing, the grapes were pressed and the must wasthen settled and racked off its gross lees. Fermentation took placeat controlled temperatures between 16ºC -18ºC and lasted foraround 20 days. Unoaked to preserve the bright fruit character, the wine went through careful fining and filtration before bottling.TASTING NOTESLemon yellow in colour. The wine is very aromatic with prominentfloral notes, citrus and stone fruit aromas. On the palate, it hasgreat freshness with a balanced acidity and a subtle minerality. The finish is crisp and elegant.
