Matt Thomson makes the wineswhile Luca Degani of Cantina Valpantena and Gaetano Tobin ofCantina Monteforte provide the grapes from some of their bestsites. “We all make a lot of very good wine in Verona, butTerrapieno is an opportunity for us to make wines from single sitesthat represent the best of what Verona can do,” explains MattThomson. Terrapieno means 'full earth'. It is a type of constructionhistorically used in northeastern Italy, an accumulation of earth toreinforce walls and fortifications. The Castello di Montorio in theValpantena is a fine example.VINEYARDSThe vineyard is located on a predominantly flat, single site close tothe hills of northern Verona, at an elevation of 100-300 metresabove sea level. The vines are trained in the Guyot system andgrown in medium-textured soils.VINIFICATION Following harvest, the Valpolicella grapes were brought to thewinery, crushed and destemmed before fermentation at 22-28°C.After fermentation, the wine underwent a second fermentation onAmarone skins and then spent two years in stainless steel tanksbefore passing through concrete and being fined and bottled.TASTING NOTESA vibrant ruby red in colour, this wine has a powerful bouquet ofcherry blossom, ripe red berries and jam that follows onto a rich, smooth palate
