'December’ by Alastair Keady
700 x 500mm3 hand pulled inks, one bronzed with aluminium powder, one a screen monoprint, on 350gsm G . F Smith Colorplan Mist paper. Edition of 4. Numbered and signed by the artist.
About the PieceAn ode to Kate Bush’s seminal festive song ‘December will be magic again’. Printed on Culture Night 2021, with degree of cautious optimism for the end of the year. The black layer is a screen monoprint, paint directly to screen with paintbrush, and resulting in unique marks for each print. The silver area is bronzed in aluminium powder, with a soft brush, while the ink is still absorbent. Playing with the formal language of density and lightness.
About the ArtistAlastair is a graphic design graduate of NCAD and the Royal College of Art. He’s worked as a designer, and design educator, for far too long to dwell on. Interested in process and materiality in printmaking, he’s previously worked in letterpress, but returned to screen printing in 2017.
Often found devising an image-making technique, and then discovering ways to undermine, abuse, and subvert it. Loves a happy accident. Disinterested in rigorous adherence to consistency in a world of perfect reproduction. Which is convenient.
