Having consulted with an experienced Special Needs care giver Kay has designed this sensory mat which would be suitable for people suffering with dementia. "Items such as sensory mats provide engagement that can be calming, prompt special memories or a sense of usefulness, or evoke feelings of joy. This can lead to sustained periods of improved mood and self-esteem, and increased social interaction." (Taken from Alzheimer's WA} It has been observed that engaging with such mats can provide a soothing and stimulating activity for people living with dementia or recovering from strokes. The mat incorporates different textures of fabric including cotton, minky, netting, nylon, wool and terry toweling. The underside is backed in cotton with a soft wadding in the middle.   Securely attached to the mat are different lengths and textures of ribbon to stroke and roll up, wool to fidget with or plait, a net with beads and buttons underneath to fiddle with buttons and a bell attached by elastic to twiddle  a wooden spool on a cord to pass up and down, a zip to open and close a little pocket  a rotating snap fastener felt heart Please note that these mats are not intended to be toys and are not suitable for children.
