In this day-long workshop, participants will create a variety of folded and sewn books. Starting with the concertina book, we will build up on this binding creating a variety of non-traditional book structures. We will incorporate sewn sections, gate fold pages and other dynamic elements to make truly original books! Participants will gain knowledge of how to use basic book binding tools and the principles of bookbinding including grain direction, gluing and folding tips. Participants are encouraged to bring along any ideas or decorative paper that they would like to incorporate into their books. However this is not a necessity as all materials will be provided, including decorative sheets from Liberties Papers. The workshop starts at 11, there is a break from1:30 to 2:30, and finishes at 5. The class is limited to 6 participants.   About Eilis: I love to combine materials and processes in an unconventional way, so when I studied at the National College of Art and Design I was drawn to printmaking as it was the perfect union of creativity and mechanics. In 2003 an American bookbinder came to the college and gave a module in bookbinding. I was hooked. I applied for an internship that summer at the prestigious Center for Book Arts in New York and spent three months as an apprentice to Roni Gross. I have been binding books ever since and along the way have trained with the Society of Bookbinders (UK), Frauke Schroeder (Berlin) and West Dean College (UK). In 2020, I won the RDS Craft Award for my book arts practice Folded Leaf.  Folded Leaf is a publishing and bookbinding press that I set up which creates handmade and limited edition books often in collaboration with other creatives. The beauty of bookbinding for me is that I can use traditional techniques that remain unchanged for centuries, while combining them with a contemporary design and my own artistic innovation.  I am a member of the Society of Bookbinders (UK), the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland, the Graphic Studio Dublin and Visual Artists’ Ireland.
