We've been on the hunt for a juicy peaberry from Kenya since our Muchagara a few years back. A peaberry coffee is a coffee plant seed that has developed on its own, in contrast to most seeds which develop in pairs with flattened surfaces facing each other. The coffee bean is therefore more round (thus pea-shaped) and often smaller than a normal bean!
This factory is located near the town of Karatina in Nyeri. It is run by Kiama Farmer's Cooperative Society, one of 5 factories owned by this FCS. With an average farm size of less than two hectares contributing to this wet mill, it serves the surrounding smallholders who benefit from the nutrient-rich soil that surrounds Mount Kenya.
The cherries are delivered to the factory and after hand-sorting, the ripe cherries are added to the hopper for pulping. They are then washed in clean water to remove the mucilage. After further sorting, they are dried on raised beds where they are regularly turned and covered in the middle of the day and at night to prevent cracking and condensation.
Normally, drying time takes about two weeks, after which the beans are moved to Kahawa Bora Millers, a dry mill with the capability of keeping smaller lots separated for the purposes of quality and traceability.
This coffee is juicy, delicate and a delight to drink!
Enjoy!
