“The more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities of the universe about us, the less taste we shall have for destruction.” – Rachel Carson
Silent Spring is a pivotal book, which brought environmental concerns to the attention of the American people.
Through a combination of scientific knowledge and poetic writing, marine biologist, Rachel Carson (1907 – 1964), reached a broad audience and helped to inspire a grassroots environmental movement.
Silent Spring documents the adverse effects on the environment of the indiscriminate use of pesticides, accusing the chemical industry of spreading disinformation, and criticising public officials for their unquestioning acceptance the industry's marketing claims.
Although Silent Spring was met with fierce opposition by chemical companies, it spurred a reversal in national pesticide policy, and led to a nationwide ban on DDT and other pesticides.
“Well crafted, fearless and succinct . . . Even if she had not inspired a generation of activists, Carson would prevail as one of the greatest nature writers in American letters” - Peter Matthiessen, for Time’s 100 Most Influential People of the Century.
