This vessel has been thrown from a mixture of porcelain and Ashraf Hanna clay. When dry it is coated with several layers of Terra Sigillata and is polished at this stage to achieve a sheen on the surface. After bisque firing the vessel is placed in a prepared saggar for firing. The saggar is a lidded ceramic container in which pots are placed with combustible and volatile materials including Mermaid’s hair seaweed, gathered from the Donegal beaches, banana skins, tea leaves and coffee grounds.  During firing the combustible material burns off transferring the imprints of the seaweed and colour to the surface of the pot.  The decoration will never be repeated as each vessel is a canvas with it’s own character and story .  Unique one off piece.
