Huehuetenago (often called ‘Huehue’) is located in the west of Guatemala, near the Mexican border. This remote area is difficult to reach by road, and boasts some of the highest non-volcanic mountain ranges in Central America. The high altitudes, combined with the hot dry winds that blow over from Mexico’s Tehantepec Plain, provide excellent conditions for growing quality coffee. This is the second of three filter coffees we have selected from Huhutenago this season, highlighting just how fruity, floral and complex coffees from this remote part of Guatemala can be!
Produced by Sotero Cano, this coffee comes from the family farm ‘La Cumbre’ - where he lives with his sons Jogli, Edin and Bayron. Sotero growns a mix of varieties, and nisperos and chalun trees provide natural shade. This coffee is fully washed using local spring water, and patio dried. Sotero is always looking to learn, innovate and improve his processing techniques. He also feels confident about the future of coffee, and hopes to inspire a new generation of coffee growers in the area.
Reminding us of black forest gateaux, we love the rich fruit notes and boozy undertones in this coffee. With flavours of dark chocolate throughout, expect a juicy, well balanced, and extremely moreish cup!
