Country: Italy  Region: Tuscany  Vintage: 2019 Category: Red Wine  Colour:  Red Producer: Poggio San Polo VINTAGEWinter and spring were mild and very dry. This brought forwardbudburst by about two weeks. San Polo's vineyards were notaffected by the frost that hit many areas in April, thanks to theirsouthern exposure, high altitude and abundant air circulation. There was welcome rain after the hot summer at the beginning ofSeptember, which enabled the Sangiovese grapes to reach theirlast stage of ripening in perfect health.PRODUCERThis property was purchased by Marilisa Allegrini in 2006. Marilisahas continued to invest heavily in the estate, and this investment isnow evident in the ever-increasing quality of the wines. Situated inthe eastern part of Montalcino, this estate covers 22 hectares ofwhich 16 are under vine, and produces wines that are classic instyle, but with a bit more weight than would be found to the northof the zone.VINEYARDSThe grapes for this Rosso di Montalcino came from three hectaresof vineyard planted between 1990 and 2000. The vineyards aresituated at an altitude of 450 metres above sea level, facing southand south-east, with chalky clay soils. The vines are spur-cordontrained and planted at a density of 7,000 vines per hectare. Yieldsare on average 49 hectolitres per hectare.VINIFICATIONThe grapes were hand picked. After careful selection of thebunches, gentle pressing followed and then fermentation tookplace in concrete tanks, with maceration on the skins lastingaround 14-16 days at 28-30°C. The wine was then aged for 12months in lightly-toasted, second-use French oak barriques (Allier)followed by a month of bottle ageing before release.TASTING NOTESThe Rosso is bright ruby red in colour. On the nose, it has aromas offresh berries, Morello cherry and blackberries that arecomplemented by a hint of vanilla spice. This is a fragrant, intensewine with smooth, finely-balanced tannins and a persistent, aromatic finish.
