Champion’s Wood Fern
A very hardy fern from South Korea, Japan and China, Dryopteris championii is named for an English botanist who brought it back from China. Champion’s wood fern is a tough, clump-forming, evergreen fern which forms a rosette of upright fronds with reddish-brown scales on the stems. The heavily divided, upright fronds are a deep, glossy green, and remain upright and green through the winter. Champion’s wood fern spreads slowly by short rhizomes. An easy-to-grow fern for difficult, shady areas where a reliably evergreen fern is wanted, and is especially good in woodland gardens.
