Rugosa Rose Rubra A repeat-flowering rugosa rose, good for hedging and seaside sites, Rosa rugosa Rubra is a medium-sized, vigorous, deciduous shrub rose with a tall, upright, bushy, suckering habit and very prickly stems. The divided foliage has deeply wrinkled, glossy, rather leathery, deep green leaflets, which turn rich yellow in autumn. From July to September, the rose bears fragrant, single, magenta-pink flowers with golden stamens, attractive to pollinators. There’s no need to deadhead, as the flowers are followed by huge, round scarlet to orange-red hips, the largest of any rose, which persist on the plant well into winter. Rugosa rose Rubra is a tough, healthy rose, and is very good for wildlife – although rabbits don’t like it!
