That Enchantress is a biography of Abigail Masham (c. 1670 – 1734), an English courtier who was a favourite of Queen Anne.
Abigail, whose family had fallen into poverty, was befriended by her cousin, Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough who was Lady of the Bedchamber to Princess Anne. After Princess Anne became Queen in 1702, Abigail received an appointment in the Queen's Household.
Gradually Abigail came to replace Sarah as the Queen’s confidante, as her strong-willed cousin fell out of favour at court. This lead to quarrels between the three women, and malicious gossip stirred up by the resentful Duchess.
Although entirely based on fact, the book is written in the style of a novel.
Doris Leslie (1891 – 1982), was a British novelist, historical biographer and fiction writer.
