Going to the Wars is a memoir of Verney’s experiences in the Second World War. John Verney (1913 – 1993) was called up at the outbreak of war in September 1939, and served initially in Palestine, Syria and the Western Desert campaign. He then volunteered for the SAS, and in July 1943 he took part in ‘Operation Swann’, parachuting into Sardinia to attack and destroy German aircraft stationed on the island. He was captured, but escaped from a train and managed to rejoin the Eighth Army after three months hiding out in the Abruzzi Mountains.
