Peer Gynt is a play in verse form, loosely based on the Norwegian fairy tale Per Gynt. Despite its origins in romanticism, the play anticipates the fragmentations of emerging modernism. Peer Gynt is the story of a life based on procrastination and avoidance. It follows the wanderings of the title character from the Norwegian mountains to the North African desert and back again.  Several of the characters are said to be modelled on Ibsen's own family. Norwegian playwright and theatre director, Henrik Ibsen (1828 – 1906) was one of the founders of modernism in theatre, and is often referred to as "the father of realism".
