Early Victorian Novelists consists of essays based on a series of lectures which David Cecil had given at Oxford University. Included are essays on Charles Dickens, William Makepeace Thackeray, the Brontë sisters, Anthony Trollope, George Elliot and Elizabeth Gaskell. Writing in a clear, readable style, he is general critical of the authors, but thinks very highly of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, viewing it as the most remarkable and inventive novel of the period. David Cecil (1902 – 1986) was a British biographer, historian, and scholar. At Oxford he was an associate of the "Inklings", the famous literary group which included J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.
