The Coin of Carthage is a historical novel set in the Roman Empire during the second Punic War (218–201 BC). Bryher's novel focuses on the experiences of ordinary people, rather than on the rulers and military leaders, as two Greek traders find themselves on opposing sides in the struggle between Rome and Carthage. In the background, the story follows the various ebbs and flows in the career of the Carthaginian general, Hannibal, from his victories in southern Italy to his eventual defeat and banishment. But most of all The Coin of Carthage is a poignant look at the choices people must make when ordinary life is poised on the edge of catastrophe. Bryher (1894 – 1983) was the pen name of the English novelist, poet, memoirist, and magazine editor Annie Winifred Ellerman.   Published by Collins, London in 1964. Good condition. Binding intact.
