March gave clear days, Gave unaccustomed sunshine, Prelude to who knows What dead end or downfall – Louis MacNeice New Writing was a literary periodical in book format, founded in 1936 by John Lehmann, which featured prose, poetry and short stories from young, upcoming writers. In this issue, published in 1941, the shadow of World War II is very evident. Stephen Spender writes on Books and the War and Fanfarlo (G.W. Stonier, 1903 – 1985) has a piece on Shaving through the Blitz. Grieve in a New Way is a poem by Margot Claire Heinemann (1913 – 1992) which speaks of “the loss of our best and bravest everywhere”. New Writing 4 also includes a poem by Belfast-born Louis MacNeice  (1907 – 1963). Published by Penguin in 1941. Good condition. Binding intact.
