The Penguin New Writing series was a literary periodical in book format, founded in 1936 by John Lehmann, which provided a platform for experimental writing and new voices. The Penguin New Writing 18 contains 2 new poems from Laurie Lee (1914 – 1997). In Milkmaid Lee sees poetry in the everyday tasks of a country girl: “The girl's far treble, muted to the heat, calls like a fainting bird across the fields, to where her flock lies panting for her voice …” Aunt Gertrude is a short story by V. S. Pritchett  (1900 – 1997), in which a broken mirror stirs up memories of childhood.   Among the other contributors to this issue are Czech journalist, Jiří Mucha (1915 – 1991), and British ballerina Annabel Farjeon (1919 – 2004). Published by Penguin Books in 1943. Good condition. The front cover of this paperback is becoming loose, otherwise binding is intact.
